VEN2013 - Dominican Republic defeats Paraguay in historical circumstances
9/3/2013

Caracas, Venezuela - When Dominican comfortably defeated Paraguay by 83-54, in Group B of the FIBA Americas Championship, a power outage forced to suspend play, with 4:23 remaining. That was declare the end of the match. The best scorer for the winners was Karl Towns, with 16 points.

The Dominicans started imposing the logical conditions that have to do with the different level of basketball between the teams. A firm defense, quick on transition, and moving  the ball on offense, allowed the team led by Orlando Antigua to get a 13-2 lead. With Diego Bareiro and Guillermo Araujo, the Paraguayan team decreased the Dominican lead to 10 points ( 19-9 ), but the Dominicans armed a 7-0 run to close the first quarter 26-9.

In the second quarter, the young Karl Towns jumped onto the field to be strong in the low post and stretch the gap with a couple of conversions. Paraguay couldn’t find a way to climb back on the scoreboard, adding that the Dominicans caused trouble with a zone defense. The triples by Ronald Ramon and Elpidio Fortuna, and the strong presence of Towns in the paint, made the Dominicans expand the lead to, 53-24 at the end of the second quarter.

On the third quarter, the Dominicans controlled the transitions, but Paraguay showed better defense and managed to score on offense through the three-pointers of Federico Mellone and the good deeds of Ramon Sanchez. The Caribbean team rotated players and was able to hold a lead with an average of 20 points (70-47). However, Paraguay won the quarter 24-17.

The last 10 minutes of the game were like a practice for the Dominicans, not so for Paraguay, who took every moment of this tournament to continue gaining experience in the continent's biggest competitions. That was the premise of Ariel Rearte, their coach. Fter the power, both teams decided to finish the game with the score so far. With the win, the Dominicans passed to the second phase of the tournament.

For the Dominican Republic, Karl Towns accumulated 16 points and 4 rebounds. For Paraguay, Guillermo Araujo scored 26 points .
